Fragrance Friday | Rhubarb

Fragrance Friday | Rhubarb

At St. Eval, we scent our stunning candles with a range of over thirty fragrances inspired by the beauty of the natural world. This week as summer transforms the world around us with sunshine and blue skies, we're taking you behind the fragrance of Rhubarb, one of our best loved summer scents.

Inspired by the joy of summer, Rhubarb is a delightful fragrance that perfectly encapsulates the fruity and slightly sweet summer scent of fresh rhubarb

Rhubarb Fruit

Rhubarb originated in East Asia, where it was first used for its medicinal purposes as a cure against digestive issues, fevers and swelling. Rich in antioxidants (particularly anthocyanins which give its signature red hue). Rhubarb is famed for its anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties and is an incredibly adaptable herbal medicine which can be used to aide heartburn, stomach pain and is even said to help with diabetes.

Though Rhubarb is actually classified as a vegetable it's often mistaken for a fruit due to it's delicious taste, a perfect mix of sweet and tartness. It's thought that up until the 18th Century Rhubarb was used mainly as a herbal medicine, but at around this time a culinary strand was cultivated and grown commonly. Used in countless recipes from boiled sweets and decadent deserts, to surprisingly savoury dhals and stews it's an incredibly versatile plant that's become a staple of British recipes and has seen a resurgence in popularity recently as we move towards more sustainable, seasonal eating habits.

 Rhubarb Spritz

Rhubarb Spritz Drink

One of our favourite ways to enjoy Rhubarb is in our refreshing Spritz drink, easy to make and perfect for cooling down with on a hot summers day. To start you'll need to make deliciously a sweet Rhubarb Syrup, for which you’ll need:

  • 130g Rhubarb, sliced
  • 130g Sugar
  • 230ml Water

Combine your rhubarb, sugar and water in a pot and bring to the boil over a medium heat. Once your mixture is boiling, reduce the heat and cook for around 20 minutes, until the rhubarb is soft. Use a fine sieve to strain your syrup, pressing all of the liquid out, and then pop in an airtight container in the fridge until you’re ready to use.

To then make your refreshing Rhubarb Spritz you’ll need:

  • Your Rhubarb Syrup
  • The juice of a lemon
  • 1.4L Water
  • Ice and Mint to serve

Once your rhubarb syrup is ready to go and cooled enough to use, all you need to do is find a large pitcher and mix together your cooled rhubarb syrup, lemon juice and water, stirring until it’s all combined. Add in ice and mint and you’ve got a beautiful fruity drink to refresh and delight your friends on hot summer days!

Just like our tasty Rhubarb Spritz, crafting the perfect fragrance requires a recipe of scent notes that work together in harmony to produce the perfect mix. We’ve paired the fruity and slightly sweet scent of fresh rhubarb with top notes of pineapple and pear, warmed gently with a sweet vanilla base to create a bright and summery aroma, perfect for uplifting your space, delighting you and your loved ones as you spend time together in the gorgeous summer sunshine.
