We hope that sharing our candle wisdom will equip you with all the knowledge you need to ensure your candles achieve an even burn and maximise their lifetime.

The first in this series is focused on candle wax memory. Understanding wax memory will help you enjoy the cosy warm glow of candlelight for longer and help avoid dreaded candle tunnelling.

What is candle wax memory?

The first time you light and enjoy your new candle sets the stage for how well the candle will perform throughout its lifetime.

Candle wax has a memory. This means that your candle remembers where it is burnt up to on that first burn and will only ever burn up to the point it was last extinguished.

This is why the first burn is the most important.

On the first burn, and each time you burn your candle thereafter, make sure the liquid pool of wax covers the complete diameter of the candle and reaches the edges of the candle container.

The amount of time this will take really depends on the candle. For our tin candles, for example, we recommend 3-4 hours  and for tealights we recommend 2-3 hours. 

If you do not let your candle burn all the way to the edges, then a memory ring will form. This means that the next time you go to burn your candle, the wax will remember where it was burnt up to on the first burn and only burn up to this last point, not past it, which is how tunnelling occurs.

Once tunnelling  occurs, it is incredibly difficult to fix. However, this can easily be avoided by taking great care with our candles, especially on the first burn.

Candle Safety Top Tips

In addition to understanding wax memory, here are some helpful top tips to remember when using your candle:

• Ensure the wick is kept trimmed to approximately 5mm in length to control the flame height and burn time. Trimming ensures that the candle will burn evenly, but also helps ensure you will get a nice clean and even burn throughout the lifetime of your candle.
• Place your candle in non-draughty areas. This helps to encourage an even burn and maximise your candles lifetime.
• Keep the wax pool free of any contaminants. You want to avoid any debris in your molten wax pool, so don’t leave any burnt matches or wick stubs in there as this is a potential fire hazard and can affect the fragrance.
• Keep the lid on your tin candle when not in use. This prevents dust from settling on the candle which could impact the burn.
• Place the candle on a heat protected and stable surface when it is lit.
• Never leave a burning candle unattended or around children and pets.
