Top safety tips for burning candles
All our candles come with a safety label, to ensure customers are well informed on the correct and sensible use of our products.
In addition to standard safety guidelines, please see below some key advice when using our candles.
- For all types of candles in containers or on a plate, please ensure that the candle is placed on a level, heat-resistant surface.
- Never leave a burning candle unattended or around children and pets.
- We recommend burning candles for 3-4 hours at a time to achieve optimum burn and longevity. We suggest burning our smaller tealight candles for 1-2 hours at a time.
- There should be a liquid pool of wax covering the entire surface of the candle from edge to edge before the candle is extinguished.
- When burning multiple candles, please ensure they are not too close together, as the additional heat can cause the candles to burn much quicker and hotter, resulting in dripping and collapsing.
- To make sure your candle burns evenly and lasts longer, always ensure that the candle remains clean and dust free. Remove any other additional objects in the wax base, as this can act as a secondary wick, causing the candle to burn hotter and quicker.
-
Before lighting any candles, have a quick look to make sure nothing has accidentally dropped into the wax base, like a matchstick, insect or any other little objects.
Wicks
All our candles have a pure cotton wick. It is important to light the wick as close to the wax as possible, particularly our pillar candles. After each burn, make sure to trim the wick to about 10mm, straighten it out, and centre it. This will help control the flame and the burn time, plus it'll get rid of any soot.
The marvellous multiwick
While lighting a multiwick candle, please light all three wicks at the same time and as close to the wax as possible. Once our multiwick candle is carefully lit, notice that a pool of wax will begin to form around each wick. As it continues to burn, the individual pools will join together. On a 3-wick candle, the pools join to form a shamrock shape.
Leave the wax to continue to burn until approximately 1cm from the edge of the candle before being extinguished. This should take around 3-4 hours and each subsequent burn should be around this time to ensure it burns evenly. The side of the multiwick should then gradually start to curl inwards, becoming its own container. Do not burn in a container, please place the multiwick candle on a flat plate on a heat resistant surface.
Majestic pillar candles
When you light up our majestic pillar candles, it's important to keep in mind that they should be placed on a heat-resistant plate or holder. Also, make sure to give them plenty of breathing room to allow for softened wax. Light the wick as close to the wax as possible so that the wax pool starts to melt. The pillar should then burn out to approximately 1cm from the edge and the sides of the candle will then start to curl inwards.
As the candle continues to burn it should then become its own holder and you should be left at the end with a small concave wax bowl. Please make sure that all labels are removed before burning. These labels will be located on the pillars base.
Using your St. Eval candles in lanterns
We love seeing you display your St. Eval pillar and tealight candles in beautiful holders and lanterns. It's important to be mindful of the size of the holder you are using, as the incorrect size lantern can influence the way your candle burns. The size of the pillar will be dependent upon the size of the lantern, but as a general guide, you need at least 3"- 4" from the side and top of the candle to the side and top of the lantern to ensure that you get good airflow. Without this, the lantern will act as a chimney causing the candle to burn very hot and very quickly.
